Getting around

Barbados is an easy place to get around.  There are a number of options.

  1.  Using local buses

The bus stop is 2 minutes down a private path from Sandy Lodge.

There are two sorts of buses – the blue and white government buses and the yellow or reggae buses.  They both run the same routes and charge the same – US$1 or Bds$2.  This is a set charge no matter how long (or short) your journey. You either pay the driver (blue bus) where no change is given or on the yellow bus you pay the conductor or driver and they will give you change.

Regga bus 300x224 - Getting aroundThe yellow buses are often driven very quickly, are more flexible where they stop and will often pick you up if you hail a bus.  The journey is often accompanied by loud reggae music.  We enjoy these buses and have never had any problems.  At times they are not for the faint hearted!  Drivers and conductors are usually very friendly and helpful.  They are run as private enterprises and they are, therefore, very keen on your business.

Buses are frequent along H1 between Bridgetown (or further south) and Speightstown.   If you want to go further afield, Bridgetown and Speightstown have bus stations and it is best to ask to find where you get your next bus.  It is a little confusing because Bridgetown has two bus stations, so it is best to check where you need to go.  If you want to go to Oistins or the St Lawrence Gap area (lots of bars and restaurants on the south coast) then catch the Oistins bus – they are less frequent, the journey takes about 30-40 mins, but all for US$1.

2.  Hire Car

Barbados is an easy place to hire a car and there are lots of companies to choose from.

Bajan drivers are very considerate (on the whole) and they drive on the left. Parking is generally no problem. The only difficulty is the lack of signposting once you go off the main highways!  Googlemaps is your friend! Or you can hire a sat nav or download maps which can be used off line.

Before you hire a car you will need to get the appropriate local licence and it is very likely that your car hire company will organise this for you. The cost is $Bds10. You will need your UK (or similar) driving licence.

4.  Taxis

There are cards for taxi companies in Sandy Lodge.  You need to agree the fare before you travel.

There is a taxi rank outside the West Mall in Holetown.

From the airport, prices are fixed – see the board outside the terminal building for up to date prices.

Taxi drivers are mostly friendly and helpful.
